There are four
levels of qualification:
1. Able Crew, which involves a working knowledge of how
to crew the gig.
2. Mast Captain, which involves taking charge of the
crew assigned to each mast and teaching them what to do.
3. Coxswain, which means that the volunteer is competent
to take charge of the gig with a novice crew.
4. Power Boat Driver, RYA Level 2, plus towing and rescue
training.
Young Peoples’ Crew - Are you aged
12 to 17+? If so you are warmly invited to join the crew. You will be
taught how to be Able Crew and Mast Captain (see above) and may attend all
crew training sessions at weekends. So it will not cost you anything, but
you will be asked to help with maintenance of the boats and called upon to
make up a young crew on occasions. You will be eligible to apply to join
the UK team in the Atlantic Challenge International Contest of Seamanship
that takes place in a different country every two years. Here’s an
opportunity to learn many new skills, meet interesting people and have fun
in the process.
